Permanents, Matchings, Symmetric Group Characters, and the Problème des Ménages

Abstract

We explain some observed patterns in the Frobenius characteristics of a certain permanent related to the ménage numbers, and thereby provide a natural algebraic explanation for a classical number sequence of Moreau, first published by Lucas in 1891 in connection with the  problème des ménages.
